Cycling and Weight Control
This page calculates caloric intake required to power a bicycle trip. The equations were given
to me by Mike Landrus, and he's not sure where he got them, so have fun but don't take the answer too
seriously (though most of the calculations look reasonable, it makes many unchecked assumptions).
It calculates an energy expenditure due to
wind resistance, adds in the energy required to lift your weight (and the bike's) the specified height,
assumes a conversion efficiency of 25 percent, and a base metabolic rate of 50 calories per hour.
